Simple/Direct Cremation

At Mc Ateer Funeral Directors, we offer a straightforward option for those seeking a no-fuss funeral arrangement. The Simple/Direct Cremation service ensures a respectful and dignified farewell with the added bonus of keeping costs down.

What is Simple/Direct Cremation?

It involves the removal of the deceased from the place of death and their direct transfer to the crematorium. This option allows families flexibility and time to decide how they would like to commemorate their loved one.

The Process

  1. Family Goodbyes & Paperwork: The family has the opportunity to say their final goodbyes to their loved one before transferring to the crematorium if they so choose. The completion of all the paperwork will also take place.

  2. Transfer to Crematorium & Cremation Process: After the family farewell, our team will bring the deceased to the crematorium. Once at the crematorium, our team ensures that the cremation process is carried out with the utmost respect and professionalism.

  3. Return of Ashes: The ashes of your loved one will be returned to the family in the normal fashion within one week of the cremation. Our team can deliver the ashes to you or if you prefer, you can collect them from our office in Fanad.

Benefits of Simple/Direct Cremation

  1. Honouring the Wishes of the Deceased: Simple/Direct Cremation is often chosen because it aligns with the wishes of the departed loved one, who may have expressed a desire for a no-fuss and uncomplicated farewell.

  2. Simplicity and Convenience: Opting for Direct Cremation offers a streamlined no-fuss process, allowing families to bypass the complexities and pressures associated with traditional funeral arrangements.

  3. Personalisation: With Simple/Direct Cremation, families have the flexibility to plan a personalized memorial service or celebration of life at a later date, providing an opportunity to create a meaningful tribute in accordance with the wishes and preferences of the deceased.

  4. Affordability (Added Bonus): In addition to the above reasons, Simple/Direct Cremation offers an added financial benefit, as it is a more cost-effective alternative compared to a traditional funeral service. However, the primary motivation is often driven by the desire for a no-fuss and simplified farewell for the departed loved one.

Simple/Direct Cremation FAQs

  • With Direct Cremation, the funeral process is divided into two parts. The cremation takes place first, followed by a separate ceremony held at a later time. This provides flexibility for the family to choose when and where the ceremony will be conducted. There is also the option not to have a service.

In contrast, with a traditional cremation, both the cremation and the ceremony usually occur within a few days of each other, as part of a single event.

  • We provide simple/direct cremation services across North Co.Donegal. Areas covered include Letterkenny, Ramelton, Rathmullen, Milford, Kerrykeel, Fanad, Carrigart, Downings and other areas upon request.

  • In both Direct Cremation and traditional cremation services, a coffin is always used and subsequently cremated. The inclusion of a coffin is essential for proper handling and hygiene during the cremation process. For Direct Cremation, a standard plain-top coffin is used. Costs will increase if you wish to use a different coffin.

  • Absolutely, once we return the ashes to your family, you have the freedom to organise a meaningful service. This service can take various forms, such as a traditional mass, Church of Ireland service, civil ceremony, or humanist gathering.

The advantage of scheduling the ceremony or service after the cremation is that it allows ample time to plan a celebration of the person's life.

  • In many instances, Direct Cremation is a choice made by the deceased before their passing. In such cases, the family or next of kin may feel it is the appropriate course of action to honour the wishes of their loved one. However, it is important to acknowledge that Direct Cremation might not resonate with the remaining family members.

When opting for Direct Cremation, we engage in open discussions about the process. Our aim is to ensure that the grieving family is well-informed and understands the intricacies involved. By facilitating these conversations with all concerned parties, we strive to find a harmonious solution that respects the wishes of the deceased while addressing the concerns and needs of the family.
